Believer, let me speak plainly to you, in the greatest love of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Stop. Freaking. Out. Over. The. Election. Stop it!
Let’s look at a few key facts before I kick off my rant.
FIRST, there is no man or woman on the face of this earth that has what it takes to govern perfectly, fairly and wisely. Not one.
SECOND, there is no human on the earth today that could possibly live up to the scrutiny (biased or not) that the media and all the world does to elected officials and then find them to be worthy, of noble character and with an unblemished past or present. No one could come out unscathed, not one.
THIRD, this election cycle, as in EVERY SINGLE prior election cycle in the entire history of these United States of America, has yielded us two or three deeply flawed, (ideally) well intended individuals that somehow whether by fight and might, hook or crook, and seemingly by the will of the people are slated as our presidential nominees. Trump, Clinton & Johnson have made their way onto the 2016 election ballot for our beloved country (collective sigh).
Philosophical, ethical and fundamental differences aside, the ballot stands. Your eye-rolling, self-righteous judgment of the candidates can do nothing to change that.
With a little less than a month before the 2016 election, I am urging you to vote on November 8th or when early voting starts (in Georgia, that is October 17th).
And for your joy, I hope your candidate wins.
Not feeling like voting for a candidate this year? Your “conscience” just can’t vote for any of the candidates? Are you completely put out by the state of politics in our country? Go ahead, STAY HOME THIS ELECTION CYCLE.
By all means, it is your prerogative and right. After all, this generation is renowned for pointing fingers to blame others and often tantrum when things don’t go their way. Yet these same people are reluctant to act because, hard work is hard work. By all means, join your entitled, anemic peers and shirk your civic responsibility to your country.
Voting isn’t about your conscience; it’s a privilege and responsibility of all American citizens.
So stay home election day, with all that arrogance you probably struggle with much as it is. I am confident it’s not the only responsibility that you are shirking—but only you know. (Oops, my desperate need for Jesus is showing.)
Believer, YOU need to stop freaking out. Yes, friend, I am calling you out and with great conviction. You, of all people in this great nation need to be conducting yourself with the utmost self-control, quiet confidence and unexplainable peace—especially now!
- Why, brother or sisters in Christ are you running around like a hopeless and desperate town crier, belly-aching about the candidates, or this issue or that?
- Why are you spending countless hours watching the news? Reading news commentaries?
- Why are you using every conversation and every medium of communication known to man to cry-out, point to or expose some new knowledge or insight about the candidates?
- Do you really think people couldn’t get this information from anywhere else?
Bumper stickers, signs, flyers, t-shirts, social media posts, tweets—petition after petition calling for this action, boycott this or that? By all means, it is your very right to do so.
But brothers and sisters, I do have a responsibility to point you to Christ, His Word, His Truth and His best (Galatians 6:1-2) when I notice you are stumbling. It’s because we’re family.
Jesus, put it like this: “ You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” (Matthew 8:26)
- Have you forgotten that God Almighty, Himself is still sitting on the throne?
- Have you forgotten that Jesus holds the universe together and everything in it?
- Have you forgotten that while God hates dishonesty, lust, greed, unbelief and pride—He will allow those things, if for no other reason to help us realize we need a Savior?
- Have you forgotten that as believers we are called to regularly pray for and obey all the earthly authorities (unless they ask you to do something ungodly or that runs incongruent with God’s Word and statues)?
- Did you forget that God, Himself, has handpicked every ruler, president, czar, etc.,…since the beginning of time?
God has chosen them. God picks them. The One True God of the universe who has been here since eternity past and will continue to reign supreme for all eternity forward; by His will, for His glory and for our best (Romans 8:28) do we find ourselves at this junction.
God has this election under control. Please chill out.
Your faithless freaking out and idolatry-like obsession with every event or news story reveals your complete and total lack of confidence in a Sovereign, Righteous, and Just God. The anger and frustration you feel is righteous anger—but, it’s not just about the candidates, the issues or the election cycle. What you are really freaking out about is your realization of how far man has fallen from the glory of God. You are watching a parade of humanity on full display through 24/7 news and an internet that is never closed.
And people, it is ugly.
This is exactly why we needed a Savior. His name is Jesus, the One and Only. He came to save sinners, like you and me. (John 3:16)
The deep opposition you feel toward the candidate is rooted in your struggle with pride. You think you and your candidate have all the right answers. You are delusional and wrong.
There has only been One that is worthy of our devotion and unbridled support. His name is Jesus.
Your guttural hate and disdain for the opposing candidate (President, Senator, County Commissioner) comes from your selfish desire and need to judge others to somehow elevate yourself above your enemy.
Jesus said to love your enemy and to do good by them. How’s that working for ya?
Dear believer and friend, I feel your pain. I can relate to your frustration, righteous anger and I share your concern about the hope and health of our nation. But you are dragging your witness for Jesus Christ through the mud, with your freaking out, endless obsession, bad-mouthing, anxious and ungodly ways.
You make a poor, poor poster child for the cause for Christ with all your hysteria and anxiety.
You need to check yourself. And it needs to stop.
The Holy Spirit is ready and waiting to help you with that—please yield.
As the redeemed in Christ Jesus we have nothing to fear on earth or in death.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
So, blessed Christian, how should you act in this (and all) election cycles? Pray on these things:
- God is sovereign and in control. ( Deut. 10:14, Psalm 45:6, Lam 5:19)
- God picks all leaders (Romans 13:1-7)
- We are called to love one another (John 13:34-35)
- We are to obey our earthly rulers (1 Peter 2:13-14)
- We are to pray for all who govern on earth (Jer 29:7)
- We are to respect those in authority (1 Peter 2:17)
- We are called to live godly lives in all holiness (1 Tim 2:1-3)
- We are to love our enemies (Matt 5:44)
- We are to do unto others as we’d have done to us (Luke 6:27-36)
- We are not to be anxious or dismayed (Isaiah 41:10-13)
No matter whom our next elected president is, know this: God picked them, for our good and His glory. He has already chosen our next president as a step to correct and discipline a nation that has increasingly turned its back on Him (Hebrews 12:6), or the next president will be a stepping stone to begin the healing of our divided and broken nation.
Freedom is a gift that came and comes at the price of countless soldiers’ lives. Salvation and forgiveness of sin comes from God through His One and Only son, and He spared no expense in bringing you this great gift.
It is in God we Trust.
God’s Word puts it best:
“ Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.” Titus 3:1-11 (ESV)
“ Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.” Hebrews 12:4
Stop freaking out. Trust God. Draw others to Christ through your faithful countenance and firm confidence that the Maker of the universe and can handle this election, and all the days ahead. Because He is, “I AM.”
