Today, I am completely embarrassed by the arrogance of John Piper, in his article titled “How to Live Under an Unqualified President.” The haughtiness and outright condemnation and prejudice that emanates from this article is positively appalling. I discern that the premise of this article is not for me (nor any Christ-follower, though I leave that to each reader to discern for himself).
Normally, John Piper is one of my favorite teachers of The Word, but this article really disappointed me (though he does make a few good points about prayer at the end.)
Seriously, what the heck, Piper? Donald J. Trump became the President of the United States just hours ago, and before that hour arrived DesiringGod.com, had posted a doomsday tome of how Christians are to survive with an “unqualified president” and wisdom on how Christians are to live with a “poor leader as president.”
President Trump had barely even had lunch as the 45th President of the United States and you deemed him an “unqualified president.”
By all means, Piper, go ahead and revile President Trump before he even gets started in his presidency. That’s super encouraging and God-honoring behavior, indeed (not)!
The way you picked apart President Trump’s character, listed all past actions, indiscretions and words (because the media missed a few?!), is no doubt a godly example of grace and mercy. Not.
You have set aflame a scarlet letter for The President of The United States to wear. In my opinion, I found the the article to be a dreadful and irresponsible witness for Christ, despite biblical references. Do we not all fall short of the glory of God?
Moreover, your insistence that President Trump, needs to publicly renounce all prior sin to somehow legitimize his faith, in my opinion, is a gross overstepping or your own earthly entitlements. Our Only Mediator for confession is Jesus Christ. What would you know of President Trump’s private confessions to his Savior? Or the confessions and admissions to the cloud of witnesses, that no doubt, surround President Trump?
As a sister in Christ Jesus, I feel compelled to call you into account, for it is written, “But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.” (Matthew 15:18). This article is divisive and is dripping with your judgment. Defiled, indeed. I beg you to repent.
Have you forgotten that, God Himself, sees President Trump, through the lens of Jesus’ completed work on the cross? Like you, and me, President Trump is a child of God. The very same blood of Jesus Christ that guarantees your salvation and forgiveness covers President Donald Trump.
“While we were still sinners Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).
As an earthbound believer in Jesus Christ, you continue to sin against God—so does President Trump, and so do I. But in Jesus, we have forgiveness, grace and mercy. It is in that grace that God’s mercy is new each day. It is the desire of every professed believer in Christ to please and bring glory our Creator, and certainly, that is the very purpose of our creation.
Have you, Mr. Piper, forgotten your moment of salvation? Exactly what was your life like before you came to the full knowledge of Christ? What was your early walk with Christ like before your whole being loved Jesus? How did you spend your early days as a believer before you came to know with full confidence that God’s Word is truth and life? And just how immediate did your joyful obedience inspire you to align your life, words and deeds in accordance to His Word?
To be honest, I don’t know your story, but I have to believe it is like most Christ-followers. Before you knew Jesus Christ as your Savior, you were a lost rebel without a cause, living in utter blindness, profound sin and brokenness.
I am guessing, like most new believers, you had to grow and walk with Christ a little while before your full confidence, obedience and life began to line up with His precepts.
God didn’t stop there…
Then, our Redeemer began a work in you and by His Word, your life was transformed, and is being transformed, day-by-day. Surely, you know that the very same God that began a good work in you, is also working in President Trump. And, no matter where President Trump is in his walk with Christ, according to God’s Word, God will finish what He started, by the power of the His Holy Spirit…and all for His glory.
Can you not extend this very grace and love to the President of the United States?
Where exactly is it in Scripture that we are to judge others, condemn them beyond all hope and then waste needless energy on trying to figure out how we are going to survive [this presidency] based on a presidential track record that hasn’t even been begun!?!!
Jesus, Himself, said, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?…you of little faith” (Matthew 6:27, 30a).
Get off your emotional roller coaster for one minute and engage reality.
Donald J. Trump, is the 45th President of the United States! God picks all leaders in all nations (Romans 13:8). By God’s divine authority, providence and grace we live in a nation that has a system of government that allows the people to be actively involved in this process (much like God’s approach to our calling and purpose, we have an active role and responsibility to pursue Truth, godliness and holiness through the Word of God, all the while our salvation is secure, by faith, alone, in Jesus Christ).
Contrary to your prejudice, President Trump is as “morally unqualified,” as any other past (or future) president. President Trump’s election was affirmed by the people of this country and further validated by the electoral college of this nation. If we believe that God is Sovereign (and we do) , then it is also safe to say that God Himself, ordained Donald Trump to be the 45th President of The United States.
There has only ever been One “morally qualified” leader on earth. His name is Jesus.
However, until Jesus returns, we’re going to have to trust the Holy Spirit to guard and guide all the “morally unqualified” that have performed the duty of the presidency in the past and who, no doubt, will hold it in the years to come.
Our faith in an all-powerful, mighty, merciful and loving God must be evident! This is our responsibility, our witness, and our God ordained testimony. We must believe that, God, by the power of His Spirit is going to guide President Donald Trump, just like He guides me and you.
One. Day. At. A. Time.
Certainly, that is our prayer.
Please, I urge you, get over this self-righteous tear of condemnation. It is so unbecoming of a child of God.
Honor God with your words, witness, attitude and testimony. Pray for our nation. Pray for President Trump. Be an encourager, a prayer warrior, and loving brother, of our fellow Christ-follower, President Donald Trump.
And for the love of all that is holy, at least wait until President Trump has had a day or two in office before you damn his entire presidency based on his past or the absence of pubic confessions, of which you couldn’t possibly know anything about…(nor are you entitled to).
Let’s let the blood of Jesus cover President Trump’s past and let’s leave President Trump’s personal and private confessions to our Omniscient Savior, Jesus. Pray that President Trump’s faith will grow deeper every day and that the Truth of God’s Word will not only transform his life, but our nation. Pray that his leadership will reunite our nation and that our great nation would return to Holy God…and that God alone would receive the glory (because He is the One worthy)!
